Sheds for Tools, Feed, and Equipment: What to Look For

Whether you own a farm, maintain a few acres, raise animals, or simply have a growing collection of tools and outdoor equipment, good storage is more than a convenience—it protects your investment.

Lawn mowers, power tools, feed, garden equipment, ATVs, and farm supplies can represent thousands of dollars. Leaving them exposed to weather—or cramming everything into an overcrowded garage—isn't a great long-term solution.

A quality portable storage shed can give everything a proper place. But before choosing one, there are several things worth considering.

At Willow Prairie Portable Buildings, we believe the best shed isn't necessarily the biggest one. It's the building that fits what you need to store and how you intend to use it.

1. Start With What You're Storing

Before deciding on a shed size, make a quick inventory.

Are you storing mostly hand tools and gardening supplies, or do you need room for a riding mower, tiller, snowblower, ATV, feed barrels, and larger farm equipment?

Think beyond what you own today, too.

One of the most common storage mistakes is buying a building that is already nearly full the day it's delivered.

Give yourself some room to grow!

A little extra floor space today could save you from needing another storage solution a few years from now.

2. Pay Attention to the Floor

A storage shed is only as useful as the structure supporting everything inside it.

That's particularly important when storing heavy equipment, riding lawn mowers, tools, and feed supplies.

Our buildings feature sturdy floor construction, including treated 2×6 floor joists, 4×6 skids, and durable LP® ProStruct® 5/8-inch tongue-and-groove flooring. Our garages come standard with even closer 12" on-center floor-joist spacing and 3/4" flooring for additional support!

When comparing portable buildings, don't just look at siding, windows, and paint.

Look underneath the building, too.

Quality construction where you can't immediately see it can be just as important as what you can.

3. Make Sure You Can Get Equipment Through the Door!

It sounds obvious—until somebody discovers their mower barely fits through the opening.

If you're storing larger equipment, consider the width and placement of the doors carefully.

Wide doors can make moving lawn tractors, wheelbarrows, garden equipment, and other bulky items much easier. For larger equipment or vehicle storage, a portable garage with a roll-up or garage-style door may be the better solution.

Measure your largest equipment before choosing your building—and allow some extra clearance.

You shouldn't have to perform a precision driving exercise every time you put the mower away!

4. Think Vertically

Don't overlook all that space above your head.

A lofted barn or lofted storage shed can provide valuable overhead storage while preserving the main floor for equipment you use regularly.

Lofts are excellent for lighter seasonal items, totes, decorations, and supplies that don't need to be accessed every day.

Meanwhile, your mower, tools, feed, and frequently used equipment remain conveniently accessible below.

For rural properties where storage needs seem to multiply continually, lofted storage can make every square foot work harder.

5. Consider Ventilation and Feed Storage

If you're storing livestock feed, seed, or other agricultural supplies, organization and ventilation deserve special consideration.

Feed should generally be kept dry and properly contained to reduce moisture problems and discourage rodents and other pests. Sealed containers can provide another layer of protection.

A well-designed building with appropriate ventilation can also help manage heat and moisture accumulation.

The goal isn't merely getting everything under a roof—it's protecting what you've stored there.

6. Plan for Organization Before Delivery

Imagine walking into your new shed six months from now.

Where are the shovels?

Where does the chainsaw go?

Where will you keep feed?

Where does the mower park?

Thinking about these questions beforehand helps determine whether you need shelving, hooks, workbenches, pegboard, loft storage, or dedicated equipment areas.

A well-organized farm storage shed or equipment building can save considerable time because everything has a place.

And perhaps more importantly:

You can actually find it when you need it!

7. Choose a Building Built for the Long Haul

Price matters—but so does value.

A cheap shed isn't much of a bargain if floors sag, doors stop working properly, or materials deteriorate prematurely.

Look at the complete construction package: floor system, framing, siding, roofing, ventilation, doors, thresholds, skids, and warranty.

At Willow Prairie, our portable buildings are designed with quality materials such as LP® SmartSide® siding, treated floor systems, metal roofing, roof and ridge ventilation, and durable thresholds, backed by a six-year wall-to-wall warranty.

You're not simply purchasing additional space.

You're purchasing protection for what's going inside it!
